For those of you who may not have focused on flexibility in the past, you may be wondering what it’s good for. Flexible joints actually require less energy to move through different ranges of motion. This is helpful when it comes to preventing injury, as you are less likely to strain yourself. Stretching helps decrease the level of resistance in your muscle tissue, meaning that it’s easier for blood and nutrients to flow where they need to. And, of course, flexibility can make daily tasks, such as tying your shoes or crouching down to get into a lower cupboard, much easier.

Flexibility and Pilates

Pilates is all about muscle control and slow, deliberate movements. These stretching movements happen in a logical sequence that will stretch your larger muscles, but they will also stretch smaller muscle groups that are more difficult to stretch on your own. These smaller groups are usually ignored when we perform weightlifting exercises, and this often leads to injury. Almost all of the exercises we teach you in our classes will improve your flexibility, as well as strengthen your muscle control.
