We at Sculpt + Sweat know a few reasons why you might be considering pilates classes. First, it’s a great workout that is sure to leave you feeling exhausted but excited for your next class. Second, pilates is one of the top ways to tone your muscles to give you that lean look you’ve been searching for. And third, who wants to miss out on a fun way to challenge their body? However, when most people think of ways to increase their flexibility, we doubt that the first answer they turn to is pilates. We are here today to explain why our classes may actually be the perfect fit for anyone hoping to increase their flexibility and agility.
How Flexibility Can Help
For those of you who may not have focused on flexibility in the past, you may be wondering what it’s good for. Flexible joints actually require less energy to move through different ranges of motion. This is helpful when it comes to preventing injury, as you are less likely to strain yourself. Stretching helps decrease the level of resistance in your muscle tissue, meaning that it’s easier for blood and nutrients to flow where they need to. And, of course, flexibility can make daily tasks, such as tying your shoes or crouching down to get into a lower cupboard, much easier.
Flexibility and Pilates
Pilates is all about muscle control and slow, deliberate movements. These stretching movements happen in a logical sequence that will stretch your larger muscles, but they will also stretch smaller muscle groups that are more difficult to stretch on your own. These smaller groups are usually ignored when we perform weightlifting exercises, and this often leads to injury. Almost all of the exercises we teach you in our classes will improve your flexibility, as well as strengthen your muscle control.
Not Just Flexibility
One of the best parts of pilates is the total body workout. Yes, you will feel your body stretch and lengthen, but you will also feel your muscles begin to strengthen and tone. The slow, controlled movements were designed to give you a leaner shape that increases your muscles’ flexibility. Dedicated pilates students frequently achieve an increase in posture control and balance while easily moving from one movement to the next.
